Each year, ENL offers three scholarships for students in Newfoundland and Labrador. Each scholarship is valued at $1000, and is open to members of Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador who are diagnosed with epilepsy, seizure disorder, or have a family member diagnosed with epilepsy.
The Zach Rowe Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student with epilepsy currently in or about to enter their first year of post-secondary studies. Zach Rowe himself was the recipient of one of ENL’s scholarships for his own post-secondary studies, and in his application he inspiringly wrote: “I have never let my disability stop me from having a normal life. All of this just makes me more determined.” In 2010 ENL was honoured to introduce the scholarship in memorial of Zach Rowe, who passed away as a result of his seizures in 2009. He was 21 years old.
Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador also currently offers an annual scholarship for mature students with epilepsy. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has taken the initiative to return to studies to advance in their present job or train for a new career. The Jim Hierlihy Memorial Scholarship honours one of ENL’s incredible volunteers, Jim Hierlihy. Jim was on the Executive Board of the ENL support group in Gander, and a great supporter of all those living with seizures.
The third scholarship offered by Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador, The Epilepsy NL Family Scholarship, is awarded to a student who has a family member diagnosed with epilepsy. The student must be currently in, or about to enter, their first year of post-secondary studies.
The scholarships are open only to members of Epilepsy Newfoundland and Labrador and the deadline to apply is November 1st. Do you qualify for one of our scholarships but are not a member? You can easily apply for membership by filling out an application form and mailing it in with your membership fee (click here for a link to our members page). More information and access to the scholarship application forms can be found here.
In 2016 we had dual winners of the Zach Rowe Memorial Scholarship! Pictured are Tanner Hann of Kippens receiving his scholarship from Board Member Bernie Larkin, and Karen Grainger of St. John’s receiving her scholarship from Executive Director Gail Dempsey.
