Did you know that there are three grants available to students with permanent disabilities in Newfoundland and Labrador? If you are living with a permanent disability and are thinking about applying for Student Aid, these grants could potentially decrease the amount of student debt accrued during the duration of your studies.
The Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities (CSG-PD) is a grant that provides $2,000 each academic year. You can get this grant for each year of your full-time or part-time studies, as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements. If you are eligible for this grant you will receive $2,000 per year of study, if you are assessed at having at least $1 of need. If you are assessed at having this $1 of need, then you will receive the entire $2,000. For example, if you are a full-time student who is assessed at having a need of $1,500, you would receive a $2,000 grant if eligible. To be eligible for the CSG-PD, you must have a permanent disability, which is defined as a functional limitation caused by a physical or mental impairment, that restricts your ability to perform the daily activities necessary to participate in studies at a post-secondary level or the labour force, that is expected to remain with you for your whole life. You must also demonstrate financial need through the Student Aid application process for full-time or part-time studies, not be in default of a Canada Student Loan, and be enrolled in a post-secondary level program at a designated post-secondary institution as a full-time or part-time student.
The Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities (CSG-PDSE) is a grant that offers up to $20,000 per academic year for students with disabilities who require education-related costs associated with their permanent disability. In order to be eligible you must have identified barriers/limitations that restrict your ability to perform the daily activities necessary to participate in your studies, demonstrate financial need through the Student Aid application for full-time or part-time studies, be enrolled in a post-secondary level program at a designated educational institution as a full-time or part-time student, and not be in default of a Canada Student Loan. You must also have been deemed eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities. This grant may cover many services including tutoring, note taking, interpretation services, assistive technology, and more.
The Grant for High Needs Students with Permanent Disabilities provides assistance to cover education-related costs associated with a permanent disability over the amount available from the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities. When you submit an application for the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities (CSG-PDSE) you will be automatically assessed for this additional grant.
